The mass layoffs of employees from IT sector have panicky hit the headlines of global media recently.  This concern has turned out to be a burning issue in both IT and IT enabled sectors. The Head hunter India has disclosed in its recent reports that Indian IT sector will witness an annual drop of about 2 lakhs employees for the next three years. The latest updates from the big players in IT like Cognizant, Wipro, Infosys etc have revealed that they have sacked more than 6000 employees on performance appraisal. This new trend that evolves in the IT eco system has put on a big treat to entire workforce in this sector.

Why mass layoff spans IT industry?

The advent of the digitilization has made a drastic change in the way technology is being applied across various domains and requires a multivariate skillset to cope with the demand. K. Lakshmikath, Head Hunter India Chairman and MD on analysis of the report submitted by McKinsey & Co at the Nasscom India Leadership Forum remarked that “workforce in IT services firms will be ‘irrelevant’ over the next 3-4 years”. Further added that the professionals in IT has to be retrained in the latest technology to meet the challenges of the fast changing technology.

How to remain as a defensive player in IT?

Re-skilling the competencies has become the new buzz among the employees of Indian IT industry. However, updating on new technologies is a mandatory requirement of any IT industries confronted with new type of technologies and are slowly making the old technologies redundant. Hence it has become important for an IT professional to remain skilled in the right digital domains. The survey by Plural sight on the opinion of the IT professionals on re-skilling reveals that 97% of the IT professionals believe in personal skill development model to meet the challenges of technology gaps.

There are multifarious potential dimension in IT sectors. Citing the demand analysis it was found that there is a 50% growth in learners opting the courses in Big Data, Cloud, data Science, DevOps, Agile-Scrum and cyber security over the past four months. Further computing the growth in a percentage scale, we have witnessed substantial growth over the last three months in categories such as DevOps (109 %), cloud (70%), Big Data and data science at 60 % and 45 % respectively.
